My first experience with Ayurveda
By: Dakini

There is a curious saying in Ayurveda that «like increases like». I was not so aware of this when I started to study Ayurveda a bit more deeply.

For me I have discovered that I am Pitta-Vatha type (which is the fire element with a bit of water in Pitta and Vatha is air with a bit of ether). So apparently a rather explosive composition.

When I started my training as a yoga teacher and practiced many Asanas every day, I discovered that I love spicy things: Chili peppers, black pepper, jalapeño and I was always spicing up my food. During all this time I wondered why it is that I ate so much spicy food. And at the same time, I realized that my emotional state was more restless than normal, explosive and a bit aggressive.

On further study, I realized that this is just what gives even more fire to my Pitta being – that as it is already fire it is as if I overload it with fire. It’s what I don’t need: the spiciness, the heat. All the things I like the most. That makes me think a lot.

I am a person who is very strict about certain things, and if I forbid myself the spicy, and the heat, the summer,I forbid myself something very deep inside me, something that I really love.

Now I’m at a point in my life where I think maybe I’m going to take it more lightly: I’m going to eat spicy food from time to time and enjoy this summer as much as possible.

But at the same time, I will try to be conscious with food – to eat maybe a bit less spicy, and also not to expose myself to the Andalusian sun at midday. I will be very aware and eat more sattvic, more balanced and see what happens. And at the same time not to forbid myself everything because this also overloads me with fire.

The purpose of Ayurveda is to balance the sattvic state. And I am going to take it as a summer game with a lot of joy.

Namasté,

Dakini
